Drew and I took a trip to Mexico in May and I’m already planning our next trip back! We stayed at the Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun. The name is sort of deceiving as the resort is located in Puerto Morales, which is sandwiched between Riviera Maya and Cancun. We’ve been to Mexico a few times before, but this was our first trip at an adults only resort (which I now highly recommend).
There are a few “must haves” that I look for before booking any hotel. As you know I have a gluten allergy, so it’s extremely important that the resort offers gluten free options. We are also both beach people, so while the pools are great we really look for resorts with awesome beaches and clear water. Other than that, we’re pretty open to trying anything! This resort nailed my first “must have” but to be honest the second, not so much. The beach turned out to be not very swimmable. There was A LOT of seaweed despite hotel groundskeepers diligently trying to clean it off the beach. Because of that, the water was pretty murky and made it hard to see the rocky areas which made walking out to swim a little tough. Despite this, we still went to the beach every. single. day. There was such an ocean breeze that even though the temperatures were in the low 90’s, you never broke out in a sweat. This was also one of the first resorts we’ve been to that actually had enough chairs and huts to accomodate everyone, so you always had a shady place to retreat to if needed. One of the other major perks was the service. Waitstaff were constantly roaming the beach (and pools) taking drink orders. They would even bring out bottles of water which was key since you can’t drink the water in Mexico.
The weather was unbelievable. It rained for 45 seconds one afternoon and that was IT! They have two outdoor restaurants that were perfect for dinner since you got the ocean breeze at night. They also had a few other restaurants located inside the resort, but our favorite was Bordeux. They serve French cuisine which sounds intimidating, but we both had the best steaks we’ve ever eaten there. Most restaurants had a gluten free section on their menu, but I learned you could also order anything and they would modify it to be gluten free.
Overall it was a great vacation and we would definitely stay at a Secrets resort again.
